the footy

It's a pretty beautiful thing to be in a proper football-crazed nation and it absolutely thrills me. It's probably my favourite sport to watch and play even though I'm the absolute shittest player ever -- I just LOVE IT. The fact that I'll probably have to watch the World Cup from California makes me want to cry. So to get into the football spirit beyond the Cup, I've been on a mission to choose a team. Being in Manchester, I've got the choice of Manchester United or Manchester City. I'm not allowed to support Man U on principle and so I thought, meh, City it is. Except that I didn't really care or follow them or anything. Also, they're not that good.

I really couldn't get into football unless I had a team to follow, you know? Pretty much everyone in England grows up with a team, based on parental preference, where they live, etc. And like HELL would I support LA Galaxy and my brother's not enough of a passionate Chelsea supporter to have pulled me in too. And having witnessed Chelsea a couple weekends ago play like the horrendously dirty players that they are, I scratched them off my list for good.

Of course, I'd turn to my friends for advice. On the one hand, we have Anisah, strict Man U fan from birth. And on the other, we have Becca who is the most wholehearted Liverpool supporter I've ever seen. Everytime we go out, she'll get into a conversation of who supports whom and shit goes down when Liverpool comes up. She's so competitive about it that she refuses to watch matches with Anisah because she believes it would end their friendship because a) if Liverpool won Becca would be too incredibly gloaty and b) if they lost, she would never speak to Anisah again. Yeah. And when I went to visit her side of the world in Widnes, the feverish Liverpool support was extremely hard to resist.

I couldn't stay neutral forever. It was only a matter of time before I turned, as I did this past week. To Liverpool, of course!

So today, in the anticipated Liverpool vs Man U match (oh, have I mentioned the generations old rivalry between the two? Think UCLA vs USC ... or Montague vs Capulets.), I went along with Anisah to take the role of Liverpuddlian since Becca couldn't handle the heat. We went down to a proper pub to watch it too which made the excitement of having a team to support for the first time and watching a ridiculously heated game all the more thrilling.

I won't give you a blow by blow since I know pretty much no one cares but I'll just let you know that we Liverpoolers (yeah, I said we, what of it?) had no hope with one of our (yeah, I said our, get over yourselves) star players was out and the other wasn't going to be at the top of his game. So basically, from start to finish, the game almost caused me an aneurysm. But in the end, Torres carried them through like always and it was a grand day for Liverpool, crushing the Mancs in a two-nil defeat. A worthy win, I'd say. Liverpool were actually playing a lot better than Man U so if they lost it would have been even more distressing.

Anyways. That was my very English Sunday, properly supporting my newfound love for Liverpool. All I need now is to get on those chants and a Liverpool FC scarf to hang 'round my room.

Also, how great is it that Torres also plays for Spain, my team of choice for the Cup this year? They better fricking win now.

I'll get on to telling you about some little updates of the past week later on today, wooop.

2.50am

264/250 words and craving one of those nummy sandwiches and pickles we got from the UCLA medical centre whenever we took my grandad to the hospital there way back when.

2.16am

Working on my abstract, 159 words out of 250, severely craving doughnuts of the La CaƱada Golden variety.

Each day takes so long, from beginning to end, but then weeks fly by in seconds. I think that's because I've been dealing with the same problems for the last three weeks, thinking about sorting out the same issues so every week has felt like I've been living the same week over and over again. I think it'll end once I get my Orange SIM card, which, yes, I STILL don't have.

I think I should shake things up by taking the time to write...
